Having established that no direct research relating to adolescent violence towards parents has been undertaken in New Zealand, the authors survey the UK, US, Canadian and Australian literatures relating to this topic. The literature review discusses a number of topics relating to parental abuse including its prevalence, causes, the effects of inter-generational violence within families, the likelihood of under-reporting and potential links between adolescent violence towards parents and youth violence in general. The proposed research design, ethical and other considerations are discussed.
