This is the first report of the Family Violence Death Review Committee in New Zealand (established in 2008). The report describes the establishment and aims of the Committee, the setting up of local death review systems and data collection protocols. Key achievements of the Committee in 2008/09 and goals for 2009/10 are detailed. Contextual information on family violence in New Zealand is presented, showing the number of family-violence related deaths and family violence events, the estimated costs of these to the economy and disparities in the incidence of family violence for Maori.
