This is not a comprehensive account of the situation in Aotearoa New Zealand. Information directly from women and children who were victims/survivors of violence was unable to be adequately or appropriately gathered for this submission. The Commission is aware that the Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister of Justice is providing a submission on behalf of the New Zealand Government. While also drawing from government data, this submission aims to highlight the lived experiences of women as witnessed by those grassroots organisations working to support them, rather than that of the government. The submission opens with general comments about the New Zealand environment relating to violence against women and restrictions put in place during COVID19.
