This was the first time the family and sexual violence sectors have come together at a regional level. It developed as a result of people from the sectors expressing interest in Auckland Council developing a strategy to address family and
sexual violence in the region.
Auckland Council contracted the New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse to prepare this report. An independent Māori consultant was engaged to ensure accurate representation of Māori views. The purpose of the report is to accurately report the views expressed by participants at the hui. Care as been taken not to ‘over-interpret’ the messages communicated. Key themes and areas identified
by participants at the hui have been summarised. This is to inform Council on recommendations that may assist it to fulfil its role in preventing family and sexual violence in the Auckland region. Subsequent networking meetings were held in 2012 and 2013 as a result of this meeting - see more information below.
Background:
On 2 March 2012, an Auckland Regional Hui on family and sexual violence prevention was held at Ōrākei Marae in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. Following the hui, in consultation with the family and sexual violence sectors, Council Officers drafted a series of short term actions that Auckland Council could undertake in 2012/13 within existing resources and budget. One of these was to hold three regional networking meetings per year. The first one was held on Monday 10 September 2012. A second meeting was held on 26 February 2013 in Mangere. The third and final meeting was held at Western Springs on 11 December 2013. A later regional wānanga focused on primary prevention was held on 24 March 2017 at Hoani Waititi Marae, Oratia in West Auckland.
